Timothy S.B. Danson
Timothy S.B. Danson is a Partner at Danson Delavar LLP. He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1978 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1980, after completing the Bar Admission Course at the Law Society of Upper Canada.
Tim maintains a broad litigation and appellate practice spanning corporate/commercial disputes, constitutional, sports law and administrative law, defamation, complex personal injury and medical malpractice, contract, insurance, fraud and fidelity, criminal law, environmental protection, and employment law. He regularly advises and represents corporations, executives, professional athletes, professionals, and government bodies in legally and reputationally sensitive matters. Known for his strategic approach to dispute resolution, Tim works to identify legal risks early, develop creative and discreet solutions, and resolve complex matters through problem identification and consensus building — at trial when necessary, and outside the courtroom whenever possible.
Drawing on 46 years of trial and appellate experience, Tim is recognized for his meticulous attention to detail and preparation, persuasive advocacy, and ability to argue precedent-setting cases at every level of court. His practice has spanned the representation of publicly-traded corporations, individual executives, professional athletes, families of victims of crime, professional associations, and regulators — providing him with an exceptional understanding of litigation strategy, public-interest advocacy, and the dynamics of high-stakes and high-profile proceedings across an exceptionally broad range of complex matters.
Tim has worked extensively on high profile cases including cases involving professional athletes, doping and disciplinary proceedings, and matters attracting significant public scrutiny. He has represented clients before numerous specialized and administrative tribunals, including the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the International Equestrian Federation, and a wide range of professional regulatory bodies.
An experienced trial and appellate advocate, Tim has appeared before all levels of court in Ontario — including many appearances before the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada.
Advisory Board — Trudeau Centre for Peace, Conflict and Justice at University of Toronto, Munk School of Global Affairs
Outside his litigation practice, Tim is a frequent speaker at judicial conferences, Crown counsel forums, police and medical conferences, and at law schools across Canada and the United States — including Osgoode Hall, Queen's, the University of Calgary, the University of New Brunswick, Western Ontario, and Fordham. He is regularly consulted by provincial and federal governments on matters of legislation and policy. He is the CEO of Danson Sports and Entertainment Ltd., an adjunct to his law practice providing non-legal management and consultation services for athletes around the world.
Tim has also gained a unique perspective on problem identification and resolution as a result of being exposed throughout his life to the diversity and challenges of Canadian and international politics, wherein viewing complex problems requires the ability to see issues from many different perspectives. Tim's father, The Honourable Barnett J. Danson, P.C., C.C., LLD., Lég. d'honneur (Fr.), was also his mentor. Mr. Danson Sr. instilled in Tim a strong sense of public service, discipline, hard work and the importance of conducting one's affairs with civility, professionalism, integrity and honour.
Outside the practice of law, Tim is an avid outdoorsman, with a particular love for extreme deep powder skiing, horseback riding, tennis, hockey, and angling.
